Theismann first showed promise as a quarterback for the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League. The Washington Redskins took notice, and signed him in '74. At first he was the team’s punt returner, but in '78 he became the starting quarterback. He led the team to a Super Bowl win, was named MVP in '83 and had two Pro Bowl appearances.
In '85, Theismann was sacked by the New York Giants' Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson, showing viewers the NFL’s most shocking moment in history. Theismann suffered a multi-fragmentary compound fracture in his leg that forced him to retire at the age of 36. (AP Photo/P.Binks, FILE)
