Fred Lorz

Fred Lorz made history at the 1904 Summer Olympics when he quit running the marathon nine miles in and caught a lift in his manager’s car. He rode with his manager for the next eleven miles before the car allegedly broke down. Lorz walked the remainder of the race to Olympic stadium, where he crossed the finish line a clear winner. But after spectators insisted Lorz didn’t run the entire race, he admitted to cheating and claimed it was a bad joke. (Getty Images)
