Stanislawa Walasiewicz (Stella Walsh)
Decorated Polish sprinter Stella Walsh cemented a lifetime of track and field achievements when she won the 100-meter gold at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. But her win did not come without controversy. Walsh was thought to be a man, despite birth records that clearly indicated she was female. After her death in 1980, an autopsy confirmed that she possessed male genitalia. A detailed investigation later revealed that Walsh was born with both an XX and an XY pair of chromosomes. (AP Photo)
