The 50 Ugliest Moments in Sports

47 of 50

Diego Maradona

Maradona is one of the most polarizing figures in soccer history. He was banned for 15 months in 1991 after testing positive for cocaine. Three years later, at the 1994 World Cup in the U.S., he was sent home for using ephedrine. But Maradona’s most infamous moment occurred during the 1986 World Cup in West Germany when the former Mexican star used his hand to score a goal to put his team up 1-0 in the quarterfinals. Despite video evidence that clearly showed Maradona’s hand striking the ball, the goal stood and became known as the “Hand of God.” Nearly 20 years later on his TV show, Maradona finally admitted to purposefully deflecting the ball into the net with his hand.
