'Assault in the Ring'
In 1983 junior middleweight contender Luis Resto and his trainer Panama Lewis were convicted of assault, conspiracy and criminal possession of a deadly weapon after it was found that Resto had removed stuffing from each of his eight-ounce gloves and tampered with his hand wraps before his fight with unbeaten prospect Billy Collins Jr. at Madison Square Garden. The beating Collins took permanently blurred his vision and forced him to retire from boxing. Director Eric Drath produced a chilling documentary on the fight called “Assault in the Ring,” which aired on HBO. (Courtesy of HBO)
