Ukraine, Russia spar over soccer in Crimea

FILE - In this Thursday, May 15, 2014 file photo, Shakhtar's Donetsk supporters wave Ukrainian flags as they react during the final soccer match of Ukraine's Cup between Donetsk's Shakhtar and Dynamo Kiev at Vorskla Stadium in Poltava, Ukraine. Five months after the annexation of Crimea, Russia and Ukraine are now squabbling over soccer clubs in the region. Defying authorities in Ukraine, Russia is incorporating three Crimean teams into its own leagues _ a move that could strain relations between the host country of the 2018 World Cup and the sport’s world governing body. Champion Shakhtar Donetsk has been left humbled by the conflict, forced to play its home games in exile in Lviv near the Polish border, a Ukrainian-speaking city that is the cultural opposite of mostly Russian-speaking and industrial Donetsk.
