Jay Cutler/Jason Campbell 2012 summary:
The Bears fielded a more balanced offense with wide receiver Brandon Marshall — 118 catches for 1,508 yards and 11 touchdowns — proving a welcome addition, but still missed the playoffs for the sixth time in seven seasons. That cost head coach Lovie Smith his job. Outlook:
The Bears hired Marc Trestman to resuscitate an offense that has finished in the bottom half of the league’s yardage rankings for six consecutive seasons. That starts with Cutler, who is entering the final year of his contract. Campbell is set to become a free agent, leaving a void at backup. One veteran Chicago should consider is Sage Rosenfels, who has experience playing under Trestman with Miami in 2004. The Bears haven’t drafted a quarterback in the fourth round or earlier since Kyle Orton in 2005. Could that streak end this year with Cutler’s future uncertain? —Alex Marvez
