Magic Johnson Magic retired immediately after learning he was HIV-positive in 1991, then returned a few months later to play in the NBA All-Star Game. A few months after that, he was on the Dream Team that captured the gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Later that summer, Johnson announced he'd come back to play in the NBA, but cut that comeback short a few games into the preseason because of all the controversy that followed. Michael Jordan Arguably the greatest to ever play the game left the Chicago Bulls to try his hand at baseball in the mid-1990s. He returned to win three more rings, then retired after the 1998 season. Many Jordan fans -- basketball fans in general -- wish his series-clincher over Bryon Russell in the 1998 NBA Finals would have been the lasting image, but Jordan returned again to play two forgettable seasons with the Wizards from 2001-03.
