NFL Draft: Day 1 Winners and Losers

7 of 11

5. Winner: Minnesota Vikings

With their two first-round picks, they drafted two defensive players who had top-15 grades at No. 23 and 25. By adding Sharrif Floyd, a versatile defensive tackle out of Florida, and Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes, the Vikings made two very strong — if not incredibly sexy — moves. Kevin Williams can mentor Floyd for at least a year, while Rhodes can be Antoine Winfield's replacement. But Rick Spielman wasn’t done with those two selections. Right before the end of the evening, Minnesota jumped back into the first round, swapped with New England, and grabbed Cordarelle Patterson with the 29th pick. After Tavon Austin, most pundits had the 6-foot-2 do-everything game-breaker out of Tennessee as the next wide receiver on the board. Patterson’s numbers — 46 catches, 5 touchdowns — won’t wow you, but his athletic ability will. He’s also a dynamic kick and punt return weapon. Three players. Three guys who can make immediate impacts in the crowded NFC North. The Vikes!
