NFL Draft: Day 1 Winners and Losers

3 of 11

9. Winner: Oakland Raiders

Late Wednesday, it was leaked that the Oakland Raiders viewed Houston cornerback D.J. Hayden as one of the top players on their board. There was even talk of GM Reggie McKenzie taking the Houston cornerback with the third overall pick. Instead, McKenzie leveraged the No. 3 pick by trading it for the 12th overall selection and picking up the 42nd in the process. McKenzie, who didn’t have a first- or second-round pick a year ago, got the guy he wanted and picked up a valuable second-round pick for Friday in the process. Dennis Allen must have really had his eye on Hayden, too, as the head coach is a longtime defensive backs coach. Hayden’s story, an incredible one, makes for a wonderful narrative. There hasn’t been much buzz about Oakland’s offseason, but McKenzie has brought in the right types of guys since March. The types of guys who help rebuild a franchise.
