The best team of the Bill Walsh and Joe Montana era lost just once all season - to the Pittsburgh Steelers - and finished first in the league in total offense, second in defense and first in point differential. A win on Sunday night in Super Bowl 44 will thrust the 2009 Indianapolis Colts into the mix of the greatest teams in NFL history. After all, they would have gone the entire season without losing any of the 17 games they tried to win.

14. 1970 Baltimo... The '68 Colts were probably the better team, but they ran into the Jets in Super Bowl III. Regardless, even with Don McCafferty replacing Don Shula as coach, the '70 Colts were dominant, finishing with an 11-2-1 regular season mark. With Johnny Unitas guiding one of the league's best offenses, Baltimore beat a strong Dallas team that would win the title the following year, 13-10, in Super Bowl V on Jim O'Brien's game-winning field goal. 13. 1998 Denver ... In John Elway's final season, the Broncos ran through the league and won their second straight Super Bowl title. Terrell Davis was the key, rushing for over 2,000 yards. But this Denver squad was so good that it even won all four games Bubby Brister started. They might have finished higher if not for the weak competition they beat in the playoffs and Super Bowl. They could run with Corey Dillon, pass with Tom Brady and shut down anyone with a stacked defense managed by mastermind Bill Belichick. 9. 1971 Dallas C... With quarterback Roger Staubach guiding the league's top-ranked offense and coach Tom Landy overseeing a dominant defense, the Cowboys won their first Super Bowl by beating a great Dolphins team that would capture the next two titles. Dallas manhandled Miami, 24-3, running for a record 252 yards and limiting the Dolphins to 185 yards. (AP File)
8. 1994 San Fran... Steve Young finally got the monkey off his back with a tremendous supporting cast around him, including Jerry Rice, who finished one-yard shy of 1,500 yards receiving this season. 7. 1976 Oakland ... The John Madden-led Raiders were stacked offensively and defensively and lost just once all season - to the New England Patriots. 5. 1966 Green Ba... This probably wasn't the best of Vince Lombardi's team (that honor belongs to the '62 Packers), but it was the best of his two Super Bowl winners. The Super Bowl I winners allowed the fewest points in the league and were fourth in points scored. Quarterback Bart Starr had the best season of his illustrious career, earning first-team All-Pro for the only time. The Packers outlasted a very good Dallas team in the conference championship before easily handling the Chiefs for the title. (AP File)
4. 1985 Chicago ... The '85 Bears had what most consider the best defense in NFL history. Add to that one of the greatest running backs of all-time, Walter Payton, and the league's top scoring offense and Chicago was difficult to beat. Its only loss was on a Monday night in Miami. 3. 1989 San Fran... Even though the '84 Niners finished with a better overall record, this was the most dominant and talented team of the Joe Montana era. The offense had Montana, Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Tom Rathman, Brett Jones and a dominant offensive line. The defense featured Ronnie Lott, Charles Haley, Bill Romanowski, Eric Wright and Pierce Holt. Nobody could even stay close with them in the playoffs and Super Bowl. 2. 1978 Pittsbur... The most dominant and healthy of the Steel Curtain teams, the '78 Steelers weren't just dominant defensively, where they allowed 12.2 points per game. Their offense was almost equally impressive. Led by quarterback Terry Bradshaw they finished fifth in the league in points and beat a great Cowboys team, 35-31, in the Super Bowl. (AP Photo)
