Top 17 Most Controversial Sports Calls

9. Jeffrey Maier Joins the Yanks

1996 MLB ALCS Game 1: New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles: Derek Jeter’s fly ball to right field in the bottom of the 8th against the Baltimore Orioles looked like it was out. Tony Tarasco thought otherwise and went back to the wall and leapt. Tarasco was inches away from catching it when it was smacked out of reach by 12-year-old Yankees fan Jeffrey Maier.

The call was ruled a home run by umpire Rich Garcia who completely missed the game interference by Maier. Tarasco insisted there was fan interference, but the call stood. The Yankees went on to win the game and eventually the 1996 World Series title. (Photo: AP)
