Lien Cheng Saxophone Company

In this Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013 photo, rows of saxophones line a showroom at the Lien Cheng Saxophone Company in Houli, central Taiwan. The company was started in 1947 when founder Chang Lien-Cheng re-built a fire-damaged saxophone for a friend and got an idea to produce his own saxophones. Now the small town of Houli is home to some 15 workshops, turning out up to 50,000 saxophones annually. In the 1980's, it was estimated that one in three saxophones were made in Taiwan, but the industry now faces competition from China, which can produce cheaper, lower quality saxophones in larger volumes.
