Fiction: Quitting Will Make You Gain a Lot of Weight
| It’s unclear why some people gain weight when they quit. Metabolic changes might be the culprit, or maybe instead of lighting a cigarette you grab a snack. But most people typically gain less than 10 pounds. “The truth is that even with a modest weight gain, you’re better off smoke-free,” says Charles Cutler, M.D., an internal medicine specialist in private practice in Philadelphia. “You’ll live longer, [have a] better quality of life and you can work on the weight later.
