Eating out can be especially challenging when you’re trying to lose weight. You may make habitual or emotional choices without considering calories or added sugar and salt. Next time you eat out, go online beforehand to view the menu and decide what you want before being overwhelmed by the sights and smells of the restaurant. Once you’re at the restaurant, ask for salad dressing and entree sauces on the side; decline the bread basket; substitute extra vegetables instead of a side serving of starch; and request a to-go container so you can take half your entree home. Feel free to ask for other modifications, like no butter, to help you avoid extra fat and calories.
