1865: The 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments
Slavery was made illegal everywhere in the United States when the 13th Amendment took effect in December of 1865. Three years later, the 14th Amendment, requiring equal protection under the law to all persons, was ratified. The 15th Amendment, banning racial discrimination in voting, followed two years later.
