The first march celebrating gay pride took place on June 28, 1970, organized by New York City’s LGBT population a year after the Stonewall Riots, which is cited as the event that kick started the gay rights movement in America. What began as a political weapon against homophobia in the U.S., is now a worldwide series of parades and festivals uniting the LGBT community in the name of acceptance and expression.
