RealSimple.com: Food Labels Decoded

"No Antibiotics"

What it means: You’ll see this on red meat, poultry, and milk to indicate that the animals were raised without being routinely fed antibiotics to keep them healthy.

The health implications: Antibiotics given to animals may create antibiotic resistance in the animals, but this isn’t thought to affect humans.

Keep in mind: Meat and poultry labeled as “organic” are also raised without

antibiotics, so look for the “organic” term if you can’t find meat or poultry with this designation.

Bottom line: If you don’t mind paying a slightly higher price and are opposed to the overuse of antibiotics, this may be a good choice.
