A recent Dutch study found that women who drank one or more beer or spirit-containing drinks a day were most likely to have a wide waist -- whereas wine drinkers were most likely to have a whittled middle and a healthy waist-to-hip ratio. Researchers are still exploring the connection, but speculate that potent antioxidants wine contains may have something to do with it. Hendericks also points out that most spirits are mixed with other sugary substances, like juices or syrups, making them high-calorie, weight-increasing choices, while beer can be high in calories and its carbonation can make the stomach pooch out. No matter what your beverage of choice, “aim to consume no more than one alcoholic drink a day,” advises Hendericks. Why? “Alcohol contains excess calories, and because your body processes it before anything else, it also slows the rate at which fat is burned,” she says.
