Squeeze in a Snack

Two studies from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey recently revealed that the more frequently people snacked, the less likely they were to have excess abdominal fat. That’s because snacking keeps you from getting too hungry, which can lead you to overeat, and prevents the body from making excess hormones like cortisol and estrogen, both of which have been shown to contribute to belly fat, says Jennifer Ventrelle, registered dietitian at Chicago’s Rush University Prevention Center. To make sure your snacks are slimming, “don’t confuse them with treats or meals,” explains Ventrelle. “These items should be foods that naturally provide nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals like calcium and potassium, fiber or omega 3 fatty acids, and no more than 200 calories each.” A few smart snack ideas: Some crudite with hummus, a sliced apple with a teaspoon of peanut butter or a stick of low-fat string cheese and a handful of whole grain crackers,” she says.
