Industrial designer Russell Wright designed this retreat, called Dragon Rock, in the 1960s. Nestled into a rocky hillside among 75 acres of trees and woodland gardens, the house and studio overlook a quarry pond. The home's “camouflage features” include a vertical tree trunk supports in the dining area, jutting rock-face in the great room and bathroom, a living green roof and a naturalistic terrace overlooking the quarry lake.

Casa do Penedo, ... What looks like left-over boulders from the Stone Age is actually a house. Casa do Penedo or the 'House of Stone', was built until 1974 with four different boulders. The Portuguese getaway has no electricity so the homeowners use candlelight to see when indoors. Wood House, Hilv... This mini-dwelling is disguised as a pile of wood that's been stacked for the winter. In actuality, the building is a pre-fab structure made of steel and plastic. The log-like appearance was achieved by applying a wood veneer. When its windows are popped open, light pours in, making it perfect for a recording and practice studio for musician Hans Liberg.

Leaf Box, San Fr... This modern cube, which stands behind a San Francisco row house, is actually an art studio. The verdant plant life that grows on its walls was introduced to make the boxy building blend into the property's adjacent parkland. Where the cube is now, there used to be a humble storage shed. Scott Green Landscape Architects redesigned the structure. It now serves as both a garden sculpture and a shelter.

Dune Home, Atlan... Carved into the dunes of Atlantic Beach, Florida these two psychedelic apartments are pure 1970s. Native landscaping on the exterior ensures comfortable 70-degree temperatures indoors. Created by architect William Morgan, they were constructed using technology that was devised to create gunite swimming pools. The two-story suites include beach-level terraces, lower level living spaces and upper level bed- and bathrooms accessible via a common stairway. The home is currently on the market for $1 million.

Green House Home... Designed by Hiroshi Iguchi, this green house in Japan is designed to nurture people as well as plants. The wall so the house were built to accommodate trees which are free to grow skyward. And the warm, eco-friendly living spaces feature light-colored wood and minimalist design elements that are sure to keep human residents happy. To control temperatures and sunlight, canvas panels are draped along the ceilings.

The Pierre Home,... Approach this house from the rear and you won't see anything but a mossy outcropping. A closer look, though, reveals a 2,200-square-foot glass-fronted home that looks over the Pacific Ocean. Designed by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig Architects, the Washington state home was built into rock. Most of the living space is submerged beneath the earth. A wide-open terrace with sweeping views of water life including sea lions and killer whales.

Camouflage House... On a steep bluff overlooking a Green Lake in Wisconsin sits this long, low home called Camouflage House. Designed by Johnsen Schmaling Architects, it all but disappears into the surrounding woods. The walls are made up of a series of panels---some made of glass, others made of wood---that allude to the verticality of the surrounding deciduous tree trunks. The combination of untreated cedar and multi-hued veneer panels results in a palette that's true to the woodsy setting. The house has a zero-edge terrace that stretches along the home's entire length so the house blends with into the bluff.

Stoneflower Hous... Nothing says camouflage like Stoneflower, an overnight retreat in Arkansas where most of the time you're indoors, you'll feel as if you're actually outside. Designed by Fay Jones, the timber-and-rock architectural design includes a waterfall shower carved from stone, an immovable boulder coffee table, a treehouse-style sleeping loft and a 30-foot deck that will have you flitting through the trees like a tree squirrel.

Cob House, Rutle... When it comes to blending with the earth, nothing beats building with it. This little house in Rutledge, Missouri, was molded into shape using lumps of earth mixed with sand and straw. The result? A non-linear home with a roof that has nearly as much plant life as the organic gardens below. Brian “Ziggy” Liloia who built the house says he did so for about $3,000.
