iVillage: 10 Hidden Causes of Pain
A Pillow That's Just 'Not Right'
| Where does it hurt? Your neck Why? There’s not much research on pillows, but keeping your head and neck in a neutral position (aligned with your spine) while sleeping should help you keep from straining your neck. Experiment with different pillows (or quantities of pillows) to find one (or a combo) that keeps your head and spine as aligned as possible. You can also try a cervical pillow, which has a dip in the middle for your head to rest in and a raised side to support your neck, says Donald Murphy, D.C., a chiropractor and clinical director of the Rhode Island Spine Center.
