Elton John, “Candle in the Wind”
Before it was repurposed as a tribute to Princess Diana, this song was an ode to Marilyn Monroe, who died 11 years before it was written. The song’s first line, “Goodbye, Norma Jeane,” is a reference to Monroe’s real name. —Jeff Royer
