Eric Clapton, “Layla”
The most memorable part of this Derek and the Dominos hit may not be the indelible opening guitar riff, but the fact that it was written by Clapton about his unrequited love for woman named Pattie Boyd – who also just happened to be the wife of Beatles guitarist George Harrison. His trick apparently worked. Three years after the song was released, Boyd divorced Harrison, and she and Clapton were married a few years later. —Jeff Royer
