When Fans Attack

Frank Zappa

The rocker was injured so badly during a fan attack at a 1971 concert in London that his bandmates initially thought he was dead. An audience member rushed the stage and knocked Zappa down onto the concrete-floored orchestra pit, causing multiple fractures, head trauma and injuries to his back, leg and neck. Zappa also suffered a crushed larynx; his voice reportedly dropped a third lower after healing. —Jeff Royer
