32. Jill Scott
Philly soul singer Scott scored the first No. 1 album of her career earlier this year, bumping both Lady Gaga and Adele from the top of the charts with “The Light of the Sun.” The album follows a four-year musical drought for Scott during which she focused on raising her 2-year-old son, fighting a wicked legal battle with her former record label and weathering a divorce. The multi-talented Scott is also a New York Times best-selling poet and acclaimed actress. In 2010 she won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie for her role in the Lifetime movie “Sins of the Mother.” —Jeff Royer
