38. Lauryn Hill
So close. It seemed like we were SO CLOSE to finally getting a follow-up to Hill’s first, best and only album, 1998’s “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” She was finally emerging from that interminable hiatus with a patch of tour dates and festival appearances, including major gigs at Coachella and the New Orleans JazzFest. And then, with anticipation whipped to a fever pitch … Hill announced earlier this year that she’d be taking more time off for the birth of her sixth child. —Jeff Royer
