Comprised of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson and their cousin Mike Love (and friend Al Jardine) and managed by the Wilsons' father, Murry, The Beach Boys were a true family affair. Widely regarded as America’s first rock band, The Beach Boys’ impact on popular music cannot be overstated. Brian Wilson’s struggles with mental illness were well publicized, resulting in his diminished role as the band’s primary creative force in the late 1960s. He is the only Wilson brother still living. Dennis drowned in 1983 following years of substance abuse. Carl died in 1998 following a battle with brain and lung cancer. —Jeff Royer
