Paul McCartney / Gladys Jenkins
When recording vocals for a new album as The Fireman, Paul McCartney found himself feeling a little uptight – a problem he solved by inventing an alter ego named Gladys Jenkins. “That way, when you go to the microphone, I don’t think of it as going as Paul McCartney and it frees you up,” he told Channel 4. “I’d say, ‘Right, you’re going to become Gladys Jenkins.’ It was quite thrilling. That’s how we approached 'Sgt. Pepper’s.’ It’s like you’re playing instead of working.” —Jeff Royer
