Regular gas price per gallon
: $3.23 Tax per gallon
: 17.3 cents (6th lowest) Number of operating oil refineries
In the past month, average gas prices in Missouri fell by 13 cents to $3.23 per gallon, the tenth-cheapest regular unleaded fuel in the country. The state is one of the few states with very low gas prices that is not located on the Gulf of Mexico — where much of U.S. oil drilling and refining occurs — nor adjacent to one of these states. Instead, extremely low ta xes in the state help keep gas prices low. According to the American Petroleum Institute, excise taxes and other fees amount to just 17.3 cents a gallon at the pump — the sixth lowest tax in the country.
