America's Ghost Towns

Summit County, Colo.

Number of homes: 29,842
Vacancy rate: 61 percent
Population: 26,843

Summit County sits northwest of the Pike National Forest and due west of Denver. The area is home to several major ski resorts, the most well-known of which is Cooper Mountain. The budget has been sharply cut over the last two years, as the county’s tax base has been decimated. Tax collections dropped 18 percent in 2009 and 10 percent last year. Lake County expects property tax revenue to drop 20 percent in 2012.
