3. Get a wholesa...Many items are cheaper at outlets like Costco and Sam’s Club – including gas. Get a membership and save money (but avoid stocking up on vats of strawberries and other bulk items that won’t get used).

4. Get a gas com...If you’re usually able to select the chain from which you buy gas, apply for a loyalty card like the BP Visa Card. It offers a 5% rebate on all gas purchased at BP stations. Shell, Exxon Mobil (pictured) and others offer similar deals.

5. Get a cash ba...If you go to many stations, sign up for a credit card that offer rewards for filling up at any station. The Discover Open Road card offers a $10 cash back bonus on each of your first five gas purchases of $25 or more within three months, plus 2% back on all gas station purchases. Chase Freedom offers 5% cash back on the first $1500 spent on travel and gas during the summer months.

6. Buy an oil fu...If you want to hedge your gas exposure like a pro, buy a NYMEX futures contract for crude oil or even unleaded gasoline. Farmers employ this method with grain and livestock to protect profits.
