Stock Up on In-Season, Slimming Summer Foods

Head to the market and stock up on fresh, inexpensive summer produce that is packed with nutrition, not calories. Dr. Oz recommends stocking the fridge with in season items like apricots, okra, cucumbers and watermelon. Apricots contain only 20 calories each and provide 25% of your daily vitamin C needs, while one full cup of okra is only 30 calories and a great source of vitamin B6, folic acid, and vitamins A and C. One full cucumber only weighs in at 15 calories, and contains silica, which may help improve the health of your skin, says Dr. Oz.

And one of our favorite summer treats, watermelon, may help you burn more fat! “Watermelon is rich in the amino acid arginine, which might promote weight loss, according to a new animal study,” says Dr. Oz. “Researchers supplemented the diets of obese mice with arginine over 3 months and found that doing so decreased their body fat gains by a whopping 64 percent!”

Try it Today: Go by your local farmer’s market for great deals on the freshest in season produce, and commit to eating it before it goes bad. Dr. Oz recommends getting 5-6 servings of fruits and vegetables a day (which is easy if you include a serving of produce with every meal or snack).
