Christopher Reeve donned Superman's cape four times. "I wasn't quite sure what I would do as Superman, so I decided that I would simply let the costume do most of the work. The technology was developed to make me look incredible, but that made it easier in that I could underplay the part," Reeve told The Mirror in 1978. "So I thought, the thing to do is not do too much. Don't pose or overact. Just be Superman."
In 1995, Reeve was thrown from a horse and sustained a spinal injury that paralyzed him from the neck down. As a result, the actor became an advocate for embryonic stem cell research in the United States. In the years following his fall, Reeve battled several major infections including sepsis that developed from a pressure wound in 2004. He was administered an antibiotic to fight off the infection, but had an adverse reaction and passed away from cardiac arrest at the age of 52. —XFINITY Entertainment Staff
