Best Actress in a Leading Role - Carey Mulligan, 'An Education'
"It was like a really good, friendly punch in the stomach. It's a good feeling, but it's like a jolt. You can be in as many top-five lists and have as many people say things to you on red carpets as you like, and it doesn't for a single second make you honestly think that you're going to get nominated." — Carey Mulligan
Best Motion Pict..."To receive these accolades from the members of the Academy is more than we could have imagined. We are truly grateful and are also thrilled for the technical people who are being recognized for their artistic achievements, as this demonstrates what a huge team effort it took from so many talented people to make this movie." - Producer Jon Landau

Best Motion Pict..."I'd always assumed that the road to Oscar was planned. I thought people chose projects that were considered 'Oscar-worthy.' No one wanted to make this film. I didn't want to make this film for the better part of the year. Everyone is as blindsided — can I say that? — as I am." - Sandra Bullock

Best Motion Pict..."Who knows if we'd have made it with five or not, but it was a really good movie, and I'm glad movies like that get to be in the top 10 because I think it deserved it," said Dan Kaufman on behalf of "District 9's" four-member visual effects-nominated team.

Best Motion Pict...Variety reported "An Education" producers Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey were watching NBC's feed of the nominations on the Internet from their office in London when they were announced. "We were leaping up and down," said Posey, who then had to call her husband, scripter Nick Hornby, who was too nervous to watch. She broke the news he'd been nommed, too (for adapted screenplay)."He just whooped," she said. "I'm afraid he was already getting texts from his agent and Carey (Mulligan, nommed for lead actress in the film). He was barely listening to me. I think he decided to go pick up the kids from school as a way to decompress."Dwyer called the nom "one of the best feelings in the world.""It wasn't an easy sell," said Dwyer, "but we thought it was a universal story and the entire journey has been fantastic. Getting an Academy Award nomination is the ultimate."

Best Motion Pict..."At times like this I do feel like it's appropriate to be thankful for people that believed in the script, in particular Kathryn (Bigelow) and Nicolas Chartier, the financier who put up the money for the movie," he said. "Those two people believed in this screenplay when it was like believing in a unicorn or something. At a time when Iraq pictures were radioactive they both believed in this story, and if they hadn't the thing would probably still be sitting in my desk drawer." - Producer Mark Boal

Best Motion Pict...Film producer Lawrence Bender called the eight nominations for the war movie a "dream come true. When I first read that script, I just couldn't believe what I was reading. This is all so thrilling," he said.

Best Motion Pict..."We are humbled and grateful to the Academy. Being nominated among these remarkable animated films is such an amazing privilege. On top of that, to be honored as one of the best pictures of the year is just mind-blowing. It’s truly been a long, wonderful ride getting here, and with all sincerity it really does feel like we’re floating on air." - Pete Docter (Director/Writer) and Jonas Rivera (Producer) said in a press release.

Best Motion Pict..."Here's the amazing thing: I'd sit on the sidelines (every year) and watch this as we all do, and think, 'I hope if I were ever graced to be in that position that I would have less cliched things to say.' And all I am is a walking cliche this morning. 'I am thrilled.' 'It is surreal.' 'I am at a loss for words.' And they're all true." - Film co-writer Sheldon Turner

Achievement in D..."Inglorious Bastards" received eight Oscar nominations, including one for Quentin Tarantino's directing. Tarantino, both an actor and director, has been passionate about the film industry from a young age. "I couldn't spell anything. I couldn't remember anything, but I could go to a movie and I knew who starred in it, who directed it, everything," he once said.

Achievement in D..."I certainly, if one can give the impression that the impossible is possible, then I am perhaps overwhelmed with joy. But I do think that I hope someday we can lose the modifier and that becomes a moot point whether the person is male or female and they're just filmmakers making statements that they believe in." - Kathryn Bigelow, on becoming only the fourth woman nominated for a best director award.

Achievement in D...Director James Cameron is actually hoping his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow takes home an Oscar for her directing role. "'The Hurt Locker' is a very, very strong picture. Of the contenders, it's definitely the strongest. Certainly it's Kathryn's moment. I would happily lose to her," he told Empire magazine.

Achievement in D..."I just loved the book, and I felt like I had to write it, and that was it. I thought it was the kind of movie that would speak to a specific kind of person -- maybe if you traveled, maybe if you had intimacy issues with women -- I really didn't expect this. And it's probably why it worked out, because when you just write from your heart and you write with your passion people recognize it. That's one of my favorite things about movies," said Sheldon Turner, who co-wrote the film's script with director Jason Reitman.

Achievement in D..."After 82 years, it's the first film nominated for best picture directed by an African American. Isn't that great? It's so exciting. How can you lose? You can't lose!" - Lee Daniels

Best Actor in a ..."This is my fifth nomination and I'm more proud of that than all the rest of it, I think. Getting nominated, to me, that's the plateau. After you're nominated, it's like a crap shoot, it's like throwing dice." — Morgan Freeman

Best Actor in a ...In anticipation of the nominations, Jeremy Renner's entire family went out for waffles at 5 a.m. When Renner called them to share the news, "my mom was screaming so loud, I don't even know what she said. Then I told her she would be my date to the Oscars and she screamed some more." Renner said that before awards season, "the biggest victory for us was that the film even got inside a movie theater. How lucky are we that it's resonated with critics, the military and now the Academy?"

Best Actress in ..."It was a phone call that interrupted a wonderful night's sleep that I was having. It was the phone call. It was the phone call that you always hear people saying, 'I was awoken by the ring of the phone' and that's exactly what happened with me." — Sandra Bullock

Best Actress in ..."I'm very happy and honored for Christopher, myself and our film. I think Tolstoy himself would have been perplexed by all this, but Sofya, his wife, would have been over the moon. So in that spirit, I am too." — Helen Mirren
