In November 2007, Shia LaBeouf went from savior of the Earth in "Transformers" to intoxicated Walgreens shopper. The actor, who was 21 at the time, allegedly ignored the repeated requests of security guards in a Chicago Walgreens and was then busted for misdemeanor trespassing. Despite his run-in with the law (and the fact that it was around 2:30 a.m.) LaBeouf cracked a goofy grin when it came time for his mugshot, landing him on some “Adorable Celebrity Mugshots” lists.
In one of the classiest celebrity arrests in recent memory, musician Kid Rock (né Bob Ritchie) was arrested in 2007 after a Waffle House brawl in Atlanta. Hours after playing a sold-out show, Rock allegedly confronted a restaurant patron who recognized a woman in Rock’s group, leading to an exchange of harsh words and then a fight. Rock and five of his entourage members faced misdemeanor charges of simple battery—so then why the smug mugshot grin? Maybe it was because the man he fought with faced a much heavier charge: a felony for smashing one of the restaurant’s windows. Rock’s smile also lasted through his release the next day, as he signed autographs for fans on his way out of jail.
Sporting a flamboyant shirt and a bizarrely trimmed mustache, Mickey Rourke looked blissfully unaware of the trouble he was in when booked for driving a Vespa scooter under the influence in November 2007. The Wrestler star was caught making an illegal U-turn and weaving wildly across a Miami street—and if his smile is any indication, he got quite a kick out of it.
With crazy hair and a winning smile, the “godfather of soul” James Brown bared his teeth for the camera (in what was presumably meant to be a smile) for his mugshot in 2004. Brown was charged with domestic violence after allegedly pushing his wife to the ground during an argument at their South Carolina home, leaving her scratched and bruised. The smile comes as part of a tradition of James Brown mugshots—when he was first arrested in 1998, he flashed the camera another (albeit more sane-looking) smile.
Paris Hilton is hardly a newcomer to the mugshot scene. Having been arrested a grand total of three times, this heiress turned socialite knows how to work the camera, in and outside of the courtroom. Her most recent offense was in August 2010, when a small bag of cocaine dropped from her purse and landed in front of a police lieutenant, according to the Daily Mail. There’s no such thing as bad press…right?
Rush Limbaugh has a particular zest for Oxycontin, hydrocodone, and other painkillers. In April 2006, Limbaugh was charged with doctor shopping in an attempt to hoard overlapping prescription pain medications from multiple doctors. After publicly acknowledging his addiction to these drugs, the conservative talk-show host turned himself in to authorities and entered a rehabilitation program. According to his housekeeper, Limbaugh took as many as 30 Oxycontin pills a day. Perhaps that explains this more-than-zealous mugshot.
Kimora Lee Simmons, the queen bee of the Baby Phat franchise, was arrested in July 2004 for failing to comply when police requested she pull over while driving her Mercedes Benz. According to CNN, the police pursuit ended after a two-mile chase and the cops eventually finding a small amount of marijuana in Simmons’ vehicle. Other misdemeanors include careless driving, tailgating, and having a taillight out. Her then hubby, hip-hop billionaire Russell Simmons immediately cried foul play, arguing the arrest was a result of racial profiling. Whatever the cause, this fashionista is all smiles when it comes to her criminal record.
When you hear the words anti-Semitic, sexist, and tirade all in the same sentence, there’s only one man who comes to mind. Mel Gibson’s infamous screaming match with police occurred after he was pulled over for drunk driving in July 2006. We wonder how he could be smiling after uttering, “"F---ing Jews ... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,” according to CBS News. Since then, Gibson pleaded no contest to battery of his baby mama, Oksana Grigorieva, in 2010, when a recording was leaked of what is supposed to be Gibson threatening to abuse and even kill Grigorieva. You keep on winning, Mel.
John Edwards was indicted in June 2011 for allegedly using nearly $1 million in illegal campaign funds to help cover up an extramarital affair he had while seeking the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, according to court documents. This shot of Edwards, which features a well-groomed haircut and schoolboy grin, could double as a profile picture for Match.com. Evidently cheating on your cancerous wife, fathering a love child, and allegedly spending lots of dough to cover it all up warrants a smiling face.
