1. 'The Exorcist'
"The Exorcist," a 1973 film about a young girl possessed by the devil, was the first horror film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The movie's resounding critical success was matched only by the number of audience members it left shaken thanks to never-before-seen special effects, including the infamous spider-walk scene. The film was considered so disturbing that it was accused of containing subliminal sounds and images to terrify audiences. Some theaters even offered filmgoers "barf bags" before entering.-XFINITY Entertainment Staff (Photo: Warner Bros)
