He was nominated for Best Actor again in 1976 for “Taxi Driver,” a psychological thriller about a former Marine trying to find his footing after the Vietnam War. De Niro played Travis Bickle, a character largely inspired by Arthur Bremer, the man who attempted to assassinate presidential candidate George Wallace in 1972.
