84th Academy Awards: Snubs & Surprises

1. Meryl Streep Wins Best Actress

It’s an unusual state of affairs when Meryl Streep winning an Oscar is considered a big shock, but that unlikelihood became a reality at the 84th annual Academy Awards. Streep’s movie “The Iron Lady” was not well-received critically, unlike the movies starring fellow nominees Viola Davis (“The Help”) and Michelle Williams (“My Week with Marilyn”), but when it was all said and done, a shocked Streep ended up hoisting the trophy. This was Meryl’s 17th nomination and first win in 20 years. In the Press Room, the actress quipped that she’s worried the world is suffering from “Streep fatigue.” Apparently it’s not.-David Onda
