AMC aired it final episode September 23rd. At the time, a production company had announced plans to continue the show on the internet, so the soap's writers were instructed to end the finale with a cliffhanger. Boy did they ever. The show's best known character, Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) was dumped by her longtime love, Jack (Walt Willey), as a drunk J.R. (Jacob Young) fired a gun into a room full of people. Erica had the episode's final, defiant line: "This is not the ending I want." Unfortunately, last week the on-line continuation of the show was canceled, so it is the ending that fans must accept. 10. "The View": ...Uncomfortable political arguments have become "The View's" trademark, with conservative Elizabeth Hasslebeck sparring with her liberal co-hosts. On November 15th, Hasselbeck directed her self-righteous indignation at guest Bill Maher, who had made a joke on his HBO talk show about trading her to Egypt in exchange for CBS international correspondent Lara Olsen a whopping nine months ago. She hijacked Maher's segment, demanded an apology because the joke was not funny and that in the U.S. "we do not trade women." Maher pointed out that, as a polarizing public figure, Hasselback needed to accept that occasionally comedians would make her the punchlines of jokes. 9. "The Ellen De...No entertainment story got more hype in 2011 than Ashton Kutcher replacing Charlie Sheen on "Two And A Half Men." As part of the publicity onslaught prior to his debut, Kutcher appeared on"The Ellen DeGeneres Show's" season premiere in the nude. In the pre-taped segment, Kutcher discussed his wardrobe with Ellen, then stripped down. Ellen, the talk show host least likely to derive any pleasure from seeing Ashton au natruel, feigned shock, especially since her mother was present.September was a more innocent time, before Kutcher's marriage imploded and he truly became the new Charlie Sheen. 8. "Anderson" De...This fall, Anderson Cooper's syndicated talk show "Anderson" debuted. Everyone wondered how the serious journalist would transition from CNN and "60 Minutes" to a lighter daytime talk show. His first episode featured an interview with Amy Winehouse's parents. It was... decent. The silver fox tapped into his past experience as the host of "The Mole," and proved himself an entertaining, higher brow alternative to Wendy Williams and Dr. Phil. 7."The Talk": Ai...When "The Talk" debuted in 2010, it seemed like a tepid imitation of "The View." The five hosts, Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Holly Robinson Peete, Sharon Osbourne and Leah Remini, seemed to be competing for who could be the most bland. Last summer, the snoozefest suddenly got intriguing when the show fired Remini and Robinson-Peete. Comedian Sheryl Underwood joined the show in September, and actress and hilarious former "Talk Soup" host Aisha Tyler debuted on October 24th. 6. "Days of Our ...Two of "Days of Our Lives" biggest stars, Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall, left the show in January 2009 due to budget cuts. Their characters, John and Marlena abruptly left town. Flash forward to September 26, 2011. With the show's ratings floundering, the show embarked on an aggressive reboot. During the dedication of a new town square in Salem, John and Marlena surprised their friends and family by making an appearance. Then, in a shocking twist, the FBI arrested John for financial fraud. 5. "General Hosp..."General Hospital's" Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Brenda (Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo) had one of the most star-crossed romances in soap history. Every time the couple was supposed to marry, something went wrong. When Giovinazzo returned to the show, the couple reunited. On February 18, 2011 the duo married in a lavish ceremony. Unfortunately, their happiness was short lived. "One Life To ..."One Life To Live" pulled off 2011's most exciting soap storyline when Roger Howarth returned to the role that made him famous, Todd Manning -- but kept Trevor St. John, who had taken over the role in his absence. The show posed the question: which one of these men is the real Todd? It was a preposterous premise that had realistic emotional ramifications for both "Todds" and their loved ones. Original Recipe Todd spent weeks lurking in corners and running into people who would not recognize him before finally, on July 29th, he came face-to-face with the love of his life, Blair (Kassie DePaiva), and planted a kiss on her, in one of the year's most romantic scenes, daytime or primetime. 3. "Live With Re...The name Regis Philbin is synonymous with daytime television. For twenty-eight years, he brightened up people's mornings, chatting with first his original co-host Kathy Lee Gifford and then Kelly Ripa, the woman who has shared the stage with him for the past decade. On Friday, November 18th the 80 year old said goodbye in a star-studded hour that featured appearances by Katie Couric and Alan Alda as well as a video farewell from Justin Timberlake. 1. "The Oprah Wi...Oprah Winfrey is one of the most influential people in America. Her book club turned unknown novels into bestsellers. Her interviews with celebrities forever altered their images; nobody will ever forget Tom Cruise jumping on her couch. Her endorsement of Obama early in his 2008 campaign is even credited with helping him win the presidential election. So when Oprah decided to end "The Oprah Winfrey Show" after 25 years to focus on her OWN cable channel, everyone wondered how she would say goodbye. Oprah chose not to have any guests, instead spending the hour reflecting on what she learned from hosting the show, and thanking her viewers for their loyalty. Depending on how you feel about Oprah, it was either moving and inspirational or self-indulgent.
