Wow!

Yep, that pretty much sums up my reaction after witnessing the magic, yes, magic, that R&B recording artist Kem showcased at TV One’s  “Hello Beautiful Interludes Live” in Atlanta last night.

This crooner, who host Smokey Fontaine dubs the “Captain of R&B,” had ATL on its feet and clinging to every love-drenched lyric that fell from his mouth. He performed some of his popular hits like “Share My World” and “Love Calls.” I could barely contain myself when he performed “You’re on My Mind.” But when he walked through the audience, singing his new single, “Promise to Love,” I spotted a woman so overcome with emotion that she was crying. It was very touching. I just love intimate sets like this where the artist can relax and be themselves, and even discuss their past struggles. In Kem’s case, he offered a sort of testimony about the challenges he had with drug and alcohol addiction and being homeless.

In case you’ve been under a rock, “Interludes” is an intimate concert with a popular artist that TV One broadcasts each quarter. In May, the network spotlighted Jennifer Hudson, who served up sexiness, confidence and powerhouse vocals during that New York concert. Recaps of her performance including a slideshow and video coverage were featured on CelebrateBlackTV.com.  Alicia Keys, John Legend, Trey Songz along with Babyface and Toni Braxton are a few of the other past “Interludes” performers. It’s a very cool event.

Kem performed at Terminal West at Kings Plow in Atlanta’s West Midtown area. And XFINITY’s CelebrateBlackTV.com team was there in full effect. I chatted with a few celebs on the red carpet, had fun in the XFINITY Recharge Lounge and even hit the stage myself (no, I didn’t belt out a song).  The biggest thrill of the evening? Sitting down with the man himself, Kem. The Grammy-nominated singer chatted with me about his thoughts on his “Interludes” set, his new album and favorite song from it, and the importance of intimate concerts like “Interludes.” Kem debuted his first album in 2001 and his fourth release, “Promise to Love,” drops on August 26.

“Hello Beautiful Interludes Live with Kem” will premiere on Sept. 27.  Be sure check CelebrateBlackTV.com for more coverage, including this slideshow from the XFINITY Recharge Lounge and this one from Kem’s performance that captures all of the fun we had. Trust me, you don’t want to miss it!
