The weekend’s here and this is what’s buzzing today: Regina King’s got a busy schedule coming up and this year’s looking really good for Zoe Saldana. Plus, there’s my watchlist and what’s hot (Audra McDonald’s openness about her suicide attempt) and not (criticism about Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” cover artwork). Enjoy!
Just when it seemed that Shonda Rhimes was the hardest working sista in Hollywood, veteran actress Regina King is aiming to take the title.
The 43-year-old will direct the 16th episode of Rhimes’ ABC hit “Scandal” that’ll air early next year, reprise her role as Janine Davis on CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” and join John Ridley’s ABC drama “American Crime,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. And that’s not including her recurring role on FX’s new series “The Strain,” the voice work she provides for Adult Swim’s “The Boondocks” or any film projects she may have lined up. Whew!
I’ve been rooting for Regina since she played Brenda Jenkins on the ’80s NBC sitcom “227.” She bypassed the usual foolishness associated with child stars to create a successful, busy film and TV career. Her “Scandal” directorial debut follows in the footsteps of Debbie Allen and Ava DuVernay, who directed episodes last season. And what a season that was! I, along with other gladiators, are curious to see what craziness Regina will direct this upcoming fourth season (who can beat the wrist-eating scene Ava directed last fall?!).
Check out XFINITY’s Regina King Collection here and watch the “Scandal” season 3 premiere below. “Scandal” returns Thursday, September 25 at 9 p.m. ET.
PSSSTT…Speaking of “Scandal,” read this story about star Kerry Washington heading back to work as Olivia Pope here!
More good news for Zoe Saldana
2014′s shaping up to be a great year for Zoe Saldana. Not only is her film “Guardians of the Galaxy” earning rave reviews (it debuts August 1), but she and hubby Marco Perego are expecting … twins! If the news couldn’t get even sweeter, the actress, 36, also looks stunning on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter’s current issue. Look at Zoe, glowing and gaining more praise. Ain’t mad at that.
Zoe and her “Guardians of the Galaxy” co-stars visited “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Monday. Watch the episode below.
The Hot List: Who/What’s Hot, Not
HOT: James Brown’s family loving the new biopic “Get on Up” (This is great given the drama surrounding the Whitney Houston and Marvin Gaye biopics).
NOT: People criticizing
Lil’ Kim’s Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” cover (I’m not saying the cover artwork is iconic but some of the criticism its received is irrational that I just disagree on GP).
HOT: Audra McDonald’s honesty about her suicide attempts (Hey, it happens to the best of ‘em).
NOT: Shamiya Adams, 11, killed by a stray bullet while at a slumber party in Chicago (This madness has to end. NOW!).
