Lovejoy

The beloved British mystery series starring Golden Globe winner Ian McShane (Deadwood, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), ‘Lovejoy’ Series 1 is now available on DVD from Acorn, an RLJ Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: RLJE) brand. Seen on A&E in the early 1990s, this wildly popular BBC mystery series is based on the books by Jonathan Gash and garnered a devoted following on both sides of the pond. McShane is joined by Phyllis Logan (Downton Abbey), Malcolm Tierney (Dalziel and Pascoe), and Dudley Sutton (Cockneys vs Zombies) in this lighthearted whodunit which ran for six series. The DVD 3-disc set for Series 1 includes 10 episodes. Played with rakish allure by Ian McShane, Lovejoy isn’t your typical antiques dealer. He’s gifted at sorting the real treasures from the fakes—which comes in handy when facing the dangerous side of his business, where certain collectors would literally kill for the perfect set of antique pistols. It’s a wild, unregulated world flooded with aristocrats, con men, and criminals, all of whom Lovejoy goes up against with the help of his mopey young assistant, Eric (Chris Jury, The Big Game), and upper-crust confidante, Lady Jane (Phyllis Logan). Of course, Lovejoy can’t resist using his wiles to sell a worthless painting or two to the occasional chump. Buy the Series 1 DVD right here.

A Young Doctor’s Notebook

Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Daniel Radcliffe (the Harry Potter films) star in this insanely dark and brilliantly hilarious four-part comedy noir based on the semi-autobiographical short stories by the celebrated Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov. ‘A Young Doctor’s Notebook’ is set on the eve of the Russian Revolution as a young doctor (Radcliffe) begins his new life in a small backwards Russian village. Dealing not only with the superstitious and less educated patients but also with his own inner demons, the young doctor reveals doubts about his own competence and struggles with the immense burden of medical responsibility. His turbulent and brutal introduction to his new practice is narrated by his older, more experienced self (Hamm). It’s a fascinating, pitch black comedy with two of Hollywood’s leading talents which will surprise and entertain in a wholly unique way. Bonus materials include a Behind-the-Scenes featurette. Set in Imperial Russia in the 1870s, this is an epic tale of passion, betrayal, society, and the search for happiness. Nicola Pagett (Upstairs, Downstairs) stars as Anna—young, beautiful, and trapped in a loveless marriage to the high-minded, much older Karenin (Eric Porter, The Jewel in the Crown). When she meets debonair cavalry officer Count Vronsky (Stuart Wilson, Prime Suspect, The Age of Innocence) on a Moscow train platform, she can’t resist looking back and sealing her fate. Sugarfoot

Will Hutchins amiably ambles on as everyone’s favorite sarsaparilla sipping “sugarfoot” Tom Brewster in the third season of the TV Western classic. Tom’s continues his long-distance legal studies while getting into more scrapes and jams than a polecat at a cactus farm, so it’s a good thing his pacifist outlook is backed by a lightning fast, if reluctant, trigger finger and even faster wits. The season opener sees Tom’s lookalike cousin The Canary Kid (also Will Hutchins) facing a murder charge and it’s a case big enough to attract the likes of Christopher Colt (Wayde Preston, Colt .45), Bronco Layne (Ty Hardin, Bronco) and Johnny McKay (Peter Brown, Lawman) and Doc Holliday (Adam West). Further foes friends and fillies found herein include Connie Stevens, Troy Donahue, Ray Danton, Ruta Lee, George Kennedy, Mala Powers, James Coburn and Robert Armstrong. And a young Robert Altman directs a pair of episodes (“Apollo with a Gun” and “The Highbinder”)! Buy the Season 3 DVD at WBshop.com.
