Preity Zinta is one of the most renowned faces of the Indian film industry and has made some of the most enduring Bollywood films in recent memory, including: “Chori Chori Chupke Chupke,” “Kal Ho Naa Ho,” “Veer Zara” and “Salaam Namaste.” As an actress in the prime of her career, she also recently stepped out in a new direction and bought her own cricket team, Kings XI Punjab.
As the youngest IPL Cricket team owner, Zinta has been a lifelong cricket fan and this year Kings XI Punjab are enjoying tremendous success, as they swept the UAE leg of the IPL tournament with five consecutive wins; something Zinta has credited to the incredible play of her team’s stars, Glenn Maxwell and David Miller.
Zinta discussed her love of cricket.
What made you venture into cricket?
PZ: I was at the top but I wanted to do something new. Films are a part of me. But I am not comfortable dedicating my entire life to them. My father’s dream was to open a sports club. I guess that’s where I got this idea. I wanted to be a businesswoman and show the world that an actress too can have an investment portfolio so I decided to make this investment. It was not easy though…
What is the likelihood of your team making the finals this year?
PZ: I am very excited about my team this year. If the team plays according to their potential, there is no reason why we can’t make it to the finals this year. Sehwag and Maxwell are going to rock IPL this year. Having Mitchell Johnson on the team, we now have the most fearsome fast bowler in contemporary cricket. In addition, with bowlers that include Mitchell Johnson, Beuran Hendricks and Rishi Dhawan on our side, team has the potential to rip-apart any batting line up in the world.
Tell us about your return to Bollywood and what is upcoming for you.
PZ: I love Bollywood. I owe all my success in my life to Bollywood so obviously I can’t stay away forever. Now that Kings XI Punjab is stable and set up, I will be able to focus on movies. My fans will soon see me in a movie with Saif Ali Khan called “Happy Ending” and another one with Sunny Deol called “Bhaiyyaji Superhit.” “Bhaiyyaji Superhit“ is a gangster type movie and I am super excited about doing this movie since it’s very different from any other role I have ever done.
What is role you’ve performed in that you’re most proud of?
PZ: I was very lucky to be a lead in “Veer Zaara.” It is such a special and a beautiful movie that contains lots of values. I also enjoyed the fact that I got to play a younger and older generation in the movie. I enjoy working in movies that have great content and touch your heart.
