It seems like just yesterday that I attended the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles. Actually, it was practically yesterday (see my coverage here) but that doesn’t mean we should let the East Coasters not get their awards, too, so this weekend I’ll be heading to New York City for the GLAAD Media Awards there.
What’s the same? What’s different?
Well, what is the same is that GLAAD is honoring those individuals that have gone above and beyond in how the LGBT community has been represented in media.
What’s different? There are different awards – like the Vito Russo Award, which will go this year to George Takei of “Star Trek” fame, who has been out and proud for many years now. Previous winners of the Vito Russo award includes Anderson Cooper, Rosie O’Donnell, Tom Ford and Alan Cumming.
Also, the evening will see the first time a country singer has performed at the New York Media Awards. Kacey Musgraves, who’ll sing her song, “Follow Your Arrow” during the show, will also be introduced by out country performer Chely Wright. As you can see from the music video below, Musgraves’ song is very pro-LGBT and even encourages you to “kiss lots of boys/or kiss lots of girls/if that’s something you’re into.” (Not everyone is thrilled about Musgraves’ presence at the Awards, according to a story in The Advocate)
Also performing at the NY Media Awards will be gay icon Kylie Minogue, who has always embraced her LGBT audience, even regularly featuring them in her videos and concerts. The night will be hosted by out comedienne Fortune Feimster.
Guests who will be on the red carpet for the event include Naomi Watts, Emmy Rossu (“Shameless”), Laverne Cox (who just won the Stephen F. Kolzak Award at the LA Awards earlier this month), Cox’s “Orange Is The New Black” co-stars Laura Prepon, Dascha Polanco and Samira Wiley, “Looking” stars Frankie J. Alvarez & Raul Castillo, Candis Cayne (“Elementary”), WWE’s Darren Young, Swoosie Kurtz, Robin Weigert & Stacie Passon (“Concussion”), Big Freedia (“Big Freedia, Queen Of Bounce”) as well as GLAAD National Spokespersons Wilson Cruz & Omar Sharif, Jr., and GLAAD CEO/President Sarah Kate Ellis.
