A sport with its origins in Japan, Sumo is a full contact competitive sport where wrestlers (rikishi) attempt to force another rikishi out of a circular ring or to touch the ground with any part of their body other than the bottom of their feet. Six Grand Sumo tournaments are held each year, referred to as ‘basho’. Tournaments are held in different cities throughout Japan, with three being in Tokyo and others in Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. The March basho, referred to Haru (Spring) Basho will be held in Osaka.
Each tournament is 15 days long, with each rikishi fighting once a day. The best winning record is 15 wins, 0 losses. If after the last bout on the 15 day, rikishi’s end with identical winning records, they will meet in a playoff bout to determine the winner. If no playoff is needed, the rikishi with the best record is the tournament winner.
TV JAPAN will cover live broadcast of all six Grand Sumo Tournaments held this year. Tune-in to TV JAPAN!
