There’s a lot happening: “Ray Donovan’s” latest cast addition, Lupita Nyong’o stunning magazine cover, Tyler Perry filling Oprah’s shoes–sort of–and Kandi Burruss sharing her woes on “The View.” Keep reading to get the deets from my black entertainment roundup.
Wendell Pierce joins “Ray Donovan.” HBO’s “Treme” may have concluded its four-season run but actor Wendell Pierce is alright. He’s joining Showtime’s “Ray Donovan’s”second season where he’ll play “Mr. Keith, a down on his luck parole officer who gets a payoff from Ray,” according to a Showtime press release. I first noticed Wendell, an Emmy, Obie and Peabody Award-winning actor and Tony Award-winning producer, in 1995′s “Waiting to Exhale“ but is best known for his role as Det. ‘Bunk’ Moreland on HBO’s ”The Wire.” I watched the first season of “Ray Donovan” and thought it was good, despite a couple of concerns that I’ll share another time. If you haven’t seen “Ray Donovan,” catch up on it here.
Stunners: Lupita Nyong’o and Cate Blanchett. Have you seen the upcoming Entertainment Weekly cover? Oscar nominee Lupita Nyong’o–everyone’s favorite ‘It’ girl–and Oscar winner Cate Blanchett–one of my favorite actresses–cover its Oscars issue and they look gorgeous! The two ladies are up for Academy Awards this year–Lupita for Best Supporting Actress in ’12 Years a Slave’ and Cate for Best Actress in ‘Blue Jasmine’–excellent portrayals of women who’s shoes I’d never want to be in. On her career moving forward, Lupita says: “In many ways, me being on the scene is doing for little girls everywhere what Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg did for me. My world exploded by them being on screen. Hopefully I will inspire and be meaningful to other people. But I can’t take on other people’s dreams for me. I can only dream for myself.” Always liked a girl with a good head on her shoulders. The issue hits newsstands tomorrow. Read more here.
Tyler Perry, talk show host? Oprah leaves the stage and now everyone’s grabbing for the mic. The latest? The media maven’s good pal, filmmaker Tyler Perry. “Tyler: The Tyler Perry Show” will debut Tuesday night on OWN after his show, “The Haves and the Have Nots,” which airs at 9 p.m. EST. I’ve included the photo that Tyler shared of himself on the show’s set via Instagram. How will this show do? Well, I know BET’s “Being Mary Jane’s” two-episode season finale airs Tuesday from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. EST, so that may offer competition. But he won’t compete with other national late-night shows like “The Arsenio Hall Show,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” or “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” at least not in my timezone. I’m sure big sister Oprah is giving him great tips. I’ll check Mr. Perry. Will you? Take a look at his Instagram post here.
Kandi Burruss, Mama Joyce and fiance, Todd Tucker, visit “The View.” Yes, honey, Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” drama has made it’s way to ABC’s “The View’s” couch. I only caught a bit of the segment, which just aired. Co-host Whoopi Goldberg told Mama Joyce, Kandi’s mother, that she needs to stay out of Kandi and Todd’s business. Welp! For the unaware, Mama Joyce has spent the entire season accusing Todd of using her daughter for her money (Kandi does have a small empire) and having an affair with Kandi’s friend, Carmon. Mama Joyce’s been cursing folks out, issuing threats and starting fights. Seemed so suspiciously uncharacteristic of Mama Joyce but maybe this isn’t just a reality TV ratings opp. There were, real tears involved, after all. I’ll have more details plus video tomorrow. Be sure to check back.
Lupita Nyong’o talks “12 Years a Slave” on ABC’s “This Week”
On my watchlist? What I’m tuning in to see and what I’ll catch up with XFINITY On Demand…
“Mixology”: We have the first two episodes of ABC’s newest sitcom a week before it airs. I plan on watching at least one tonight and you can too. It premieres Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. EST on ABC. Watch it here.
“Scandal”: Hey, Gladiators, new episodes featuring everyone’s favorite fixer returns next week. You can watch a rerun airing tonight or check out past episodes online here. “Scandal” airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
The Hot List: Who/What’s Hot, Not
HOT: Cee-Lo Green’s touring with Lionel Richie. (He may be leaving “The Voice” but he’s hanging with Tuskegee’s finest.)
NOT: The possibility that pregnant mom, Rachel Fryer, killed her 2-year-old daughter. (She hasn’t been charged, yet, but this looks fishy.)
HOT: Forty-year-old Pharrell Williams looking the same way he did 25 years ago. (He’s no vampire. His secret? Washing his face. Ha!)
NOT: Allen Iverson’s basketball career. (He got me excited about post-Michael Jordan NBA action. Hope he discovers a new love.)
