Miley Cyrus helped “Saturday Night Live” touch all the pop-culture bases when she guest-hosted the show and also served as the show’s musical guest.
She didn’t blatantly twerk — as most might have expected her to do — but the subject of her twerking exhibition at the MTV Video Music Awards in August came up in the show’s opening bit (the “cold open”) and also in Miley’s opening monologue.
The opening sketch had survivors of a future apocalypse pinpointing the moment when the world ended — which they identified as the day Miley put on her twerking performance at the 2013 VMAs. Miley herself brought up the subject in her opening monologue, in which she declined to apologize for her controversial, sexualized performance.
She also literally put her former kid-show character, Hannah Montana, to rest — in peace. “I can tell you what she’s been up to,” Miley reported on the subject of Hannah. Then Miley added matter-of-factly: “She was murdered.”
The show also took on the federal-government shutdown and last weekend’s “Breaking Bad” series finale. The revered AMC series was part of a Piers Morgan spoof that centered mainly on the news last week that a planned CNN documentary about Hillary Clinton and an NBC miniseries about the former First Lady were both halted by their respective networks.
