One summer night, I was strolling along Chicago’s famed Magnificent Mile when I passed a store window, perhaps Max Mara, and thought aloud, “Now that looks like something Olivia Pope would wear.” I then wondered, why a clothing retailer or label hasn’t released a “Scandal”-themed collection similar to Banana Republic’s Mad Men Collection or H&M’s Dragon Tattoo Collection. If you watch ABC’s hit “Scandal’ you know high-profile crisis manager Pope is chic. Whether directing her team of “gladiators in suits” to clean up a bloody crime scene or attending a press conference, girlfriend serves up plenty of style. And she’s not the only one. Gladiator Harrison Wright looks dapper, usually in three-piece suits, and First Lady Mellie Grant wears vibrant-hued outfits befitting her role. It turns out I wasn’t the only one who thought the show’s fashion needed an platform. Today, Saks Fifth Avenue, teaming with ABC and Mercedes Benz, will celebrate “Scandal’s” third season premiere with an invitation-only extravaganza that pays homage to the show’s sought-after style aesthetic. Saks’ New York flagship store has unveiled a window installation featuring the personal style of the show’s main cast. Kerry Washington, who plays Pope, and the show’s Emmy Award-winning costume designer, Lyn Paolo, curated the display, which will include designer brands Giorgio Armani, Donna Karan and Michael Kors, a few on Pope. The presentation is also available to view online. Many “Scandal” fans will agree that the Saks partnership is great but doesn’t quite fulfill the desire for a ready-to-wear collection demonstrating Pope and her comrades’ sophistication and glamour. ABC reps said there isn’t anything planned at the moment. I think a collection at a lower price-point should be considered as everyone doesn’t have a Saks budget. Until then, check out the Saks display (use #ScandalAtSaks on social media) and let the clip below hold you over until tomorrow. Less than 24 hours left!
A quick reminder of why Olivia Pope is one of TV’s most fashionable characters
Cicely Tyson and Kerry Washington share wisdom over breakfast: Legendary actress Cicely Tyson might as well be a jeweler because she constantly gives jewels away. OK, that sounds a bit corny, but it’s true. And I love it! Last year, during an interview, singer-songwriter India.Arie shared with me how Tyson offered her valuable wisdom that changed how she accepted herself. And “Scandal” actress Kerry Washington recently received the same gift. During an interview with “The New York Times,” Tyson and Washington sat down with the newspaper to discuss their experiences in in Hollywood, their need for privacy and their parents. I’ve always felt that it’s important to have inter-generational communication and relationships because we can learn from each other. So knowing that Tyson, who was nominated for an Oscar for 1972′s “Sounder” and in June won a best actress Tony for “A Trip to Bountiful,” is offering sage wisdom and the Emmy-nominated Washington wisely accepts, and vice versa, is smile worthy. There are a few things that I was unaware of or simply forgot about the actresses that the NYT piece reminded me. I pulled three facts from the article about each lady that you may not have known.
1. Her cousin is Milly Silva, who’s running for Lieutenant Governor for New Jersey on the Buono-Silva ticket, the third all-female ticket in U.S. history
2. Her professor mother and businessman father didn’t want her to pursue acting. “My mother was devastated,” Washington shared.
3. She suggested the entire “Scandal” cast live-tweet when episodes air. “Scandal” gets an impressive 200,000 tweets per episode!
1. She never starred in a blaxploitation film, which were wildly popular in the ’70s.
2. Her West Indian parents didn’t want her to be an actress either. Tyson’s mother even kicked her out the house and the two didn’t speak for two years.
3. She’s been interest in “A Trip to Bountiful” since seeing Geraldine Page in the film 28 years ago.
BONUS: Washington’s Olivia Pope will wear a white Burberry trench in a very dramatic moment during tomorrow’s season 3 premiere. Oh?
“Doc McStuffins” creator explains why character is black: Anyone who spends time around little ones is probably familiar with the Disney Jr.’s hit “Doc McStuffins,” an animated pre-school series about a 6-year-old girl who communicates with and plays doctor to her toys. One of the reasons I heart this show, aside from the good quality, is that Dottie “Doc” McStuffins is a little black girl who wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a doctor. In the meantime, she’s good playing make-believe with her toys. What’s interesting, because of Doc and her brother’s young age, the story required a parent to stay home. Yep, her father is a stay-at-home dad but his career could be revealed as the series progresses, “Doc” creator Chris Nee shared on “Melissa Harris-Perry.” When Harris-Perry asked Nee why Doc was black, she said that Disney wanted to have a show featuring a person of color. “It’s such a simple decision to make,” says Nee, who is white. “We see how that impact has trickled out into the world to make sure we have representations of all kind of kids.” She ain’t lying. ”Doc” was the No. 1 cable TV show for kids ages 2-5 and the No. 1 preschool series in total viewers and women ages 18-49, Melissa Harris-Perry shared during her show. I think it reinforces actual real-life experiences of all children and broadens the world’s perceptions of black Americans and women. I mean, who didn’t imitate their kids when they were children? My sisters and I played school, imitating our educator mother, and my friends, like Doc, replicated their doctor parent. This show is definitely one I allow my nephews to watch. “Revolution”: A few twists and new characters added (Nicole Ari Parker as Secretary Justine Allenford). How did Aaron come back from the dead? Let’s find out! [Watch here]
“Mindy Project”: Haven’t even watched this season yet so will catch up on XFINITY. [Watch here]
