When we last saw Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Laughlin) in the Season 3 finale of “Hawaii Five-O,” he was trapped in the maximum-security prison where Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos) is incarcerated as terrorists torch their way into the room in an attempt to kill Wo Fat.
“We saw that door being cut. You are going to see that door cave in and we are going to start right there,” executive producer/showrunner Peter Lenkov tells xfinityTV in this exclusive interview. “The season is going to start with that door opening and whoever is on the other side is going to breech the room and McGarrett is going to have to deal with that.”
Normally, McGarrett would want Wo Fat dead, but right now, he is driven to keep him alive to get answers to the question of why his mother (Christine Lahti) went to visit Wo Fat before she left for China.
But saving Wo Fat is just the beginning of the Season 4 premiere. Concurrently with the attack on the prison, members of the NLM [National Liberation Movement] storm the building where Five-0 is housed and copy the computer data, which contains Kono (Grace Park) and Adam’s (Ian Anthony Dale) secret location. And just when it looks as if Five-0 is back in control, Catherine (Michelle Borth) is kidnapped, forcing McGarrett to turn on his own as he tries to save her.
Want to know more? We have answers as Lenkov answers some of the burning questions for Season 4 of “Hawaii Five-0.” Read on!
We know that Adam killed his brother Michael (Daniel Henney), but it was just Adam, Michael and Kono there, so why did they have to flee to Hong Kong? Why couldn’t they do a cover up?
“I think it was very clear that Michael was building an army and aligning himself with people to take on his brother and, I think, they were very aware of what was going down. The fact that he was killed, they would have been very aware of it,” Lenkov tells xfinityTV.
Will Kono be back? In the Season 2 finale, Chin Ho Kelly’s (Daniel Dae Kim) wife was killed off. In the Season 3 finale, Kono follows her heart and leaves to be with the man she loves.
“That doesn’t mean she isn’t on the show,” Lenkov says. “We are an international show, we are not just set on the islands. Kono is coming back.”
Could McGarrett and Wo Fat be half brothers? Is that why Doris didn’t shoot Wo Fat when she had the chance last season?
“Everybody is positing that. That was even an idea we floated very early on, but there is a twist to that, so I would say it is not the obvious answer,” Lenkov says.
Chin Ho called Leilani (Lindsay Price) for a first date. Is he going to have some romance this season? Is he recovering from his wife’s murder?
“We are hoping. It depends on how he behaves,” Lenkov teases.
Gabrielle (Autumn Reeser) came back for Dano. Will she be on more episodes this season?
“We are hoping,” Lenkov says. “We have her in one right now. She is going to take some family time this year, so I don’t know how many episodes we are going to have her for, but we will have her for at least one.”
For those who haven’t seen her pregnancy blog, Reeser is in her final trimester, expecting her second child sometime at the end of November, so she could be available to work again at the tail end of Season 4.
What can you tell us about the cases for this season?
“Our first episode is probably our most ambitions episode in terms of action, but one of the things we are doing this year is trying to tell some really good stories, tell some mythology stories, and some flashback episodes,” Lenkov says. “We are going to try to tell more about our characters. We are going to see a flashback episode that features Chin Ho Kelly and we are going to see Jack McGarrett (William Sadler) [Steve's dad] when he was Chin Ho’s mentor.
Lenkov also indicated that they will again take an episode from the original series and re-work it for this season. Which episode has not yet been determined.
Who are this season’s guest stars?
